| Question about multi vitamins |
[19 Jul 2009|09:49pm] |
So my boyfriend and I were at Henry's today looking for a multi vitamin. I spoke to the employee in the vitamin section (a fellow vegetarian!) and he told me to to try the Realfood Organics - Her Daily Nutrition kind.
He mentioned that it would also be fine for my boyfriend to take. (as long as he could get past the pink box!) :)
So I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this brand. It's all from food sources, instead of the synthetic vitamins, comes from sustainable farms, and sounds really good. It's quite expensive though, and I was told with vitamins you get what you pay for.
Anyone use/used it? You can see it on the web here: http://www.realfoodorganics.com/her-daily-nutrition/

| Fake chick'n recipes |
[19 Jul 2009|09:27pm] |
|
Based on an anonymous tip, I scored a bunch of chick'n strips (Gardein brand) for $.99 per 7 ounce package at a local market called Fresh and Easy. I have 3 regular strips packages and 3 chick'n "skewers" in a chili-lime marinade. They won't go bad for over a month, but I've been in stir-fry overload lately. I've also made a chick'n and mushrooms crockpot dish and a chick'n mole tostada dish recently. Any idea for good meals using either of these? Bonus points if it's somewhat low-fat and appeals to omnis (though the boyfriend is pretty accepting when it comes to what I cook).

Waffle is on an another new medication. Holy crap. That's 5 total, 3 are twice a day and 2 are once a day. Bella is on one of the same medications, but hers is mixed by a different company, so it's a whole seperate thing, and only once every other day. The new medication is pretty cheap, about $15 for 2 or 3 months, but it's an immunosuppressant. This means that he needs a $50 blood test every month. Along with the re-check fee, $12, and all his other medications.. $60, $40, $16, and I think $30. These generally last about a month, maybe less. THEN, add in there his Lupron injections for his adrenal disease. Those are about $60 a shot - he gets one every 6 weeks or so. I don't have to pay for Bella's medication, because she is a foster, so that's helpful. But this is tough. This little boy has had more medical bills and check-ups in his 4 years than I've had my entire life. I would do anything for him, but the medications are just getting tough. I'd told the vet tech (wonderful Claudia!) that I could only afford the new meds if we were stopping one of the old ones.. she said we would be but I guess the vet decided not to.
And to add to that, I make my own soup (a soupy food mixture made to plump up sick ferrets, and in my case, mix with meds so they taste less like ass), and that is not cheap. Prescription cat food, powdered egg, powdered goat's milk, and special ferret supplements. This stuff is not always easy to find, but there's no way I would use anything less, even if it's not as costly. I've seen little Waffle gain a ton of healthy weight since I started making it myself.
I also just recently found out that Bella is blind. She may be able to see a little, but most likely no more than shadows. She's a tough little girl, she's always the one to climb on top of something she shouldn't, or attack Pedro when he's being a butt. I'm so glad that I am fostering these two, it's tough with Waffle needing so much care, but I can tell he's a happy little boy. Ferret piles now happen all the time, I come home to at least two ferrets snuggling, if not all three of them in the same hammy. Even when we go to Jeff's, where I don't currently have a big hammy, they all pile into a smaller one.. with Pedro's big butt usually hanging out.
I am exhausted. I can't sleep anymore without tylenol PM, unless it's on a friday, which is SO unfair. I've tried not taking it before, because I don't like the idea of becoming addicted, but then I stay up til 2 or 3 AM - at best - even if I'm tired. My sleep feels like it's useless lately no matter what I do. I wake up exhausted, whether I got 3 hours of sleep or 10, or anything in between.
I haven't posted since my entry about Jeff and I taking a break. It ended up being about a day until we got back together. It's hard for me to really explain what's going on between us.. we get along well sometimes but when we fight it's a huge fight. I don't think he really understands me, still. I don't even have the energy to think about it right now.

| Skittles! |
[17 Jul 2009|06:35pm] |
I checked the tags (hey! thanks for making the tabs useful!) and didn't see anything about this...
BUT DID ANYONE ELSE MISS THE MEMO THAT SKITTLES IN THE US NO LONGER HAVE GELATIN IN 'EM???
Sorry for the caps, but this was pretty exciting news for me. 13 years with no Skittles is a long time.
Does anyone 'round these parts know the carmine/shellac situation with the new(ish)ly-reformulated Skittles?

| Why did you become vegetarian? |
[17 Jul 2009|02:40pm] |
Why did you choose to become vegetarian? If the primary reason is for the animals, what is it that prevents you from becoming vegan?
When I was 16-years-old, my best friend told me she wanted to become a vegetarian. Convinced she was trying to kill herself, I went home that night to research all the unhealthy reasons that being a vegetarian was bad for your health. Surprise, surprise what I found shocked me. Not only was a vegetarian diet healthy, it was probably better for you than a SAD of meat and potatoes. I decided that night to become a vegetarian. To the horror of my family, I stopped eating meat. My sister HARASSED me every single night at dinner time to eat meat. She would dance around the table shaking her ass singing "eat meat, eat meat." A few years later I received a call from my mother, nearly in tears, telling me that my sister had now become a vegetarian. I thought it was fantastic, despite all the harassment I got from her before. Later that year, I was reading an article about milk and how it contains puss and blood and it's another species breast milk, ew, (I'm sure you've all read/heard about why milk is bad for you) and I stopped drinking it. There have been a couple of times where I decided to go full vegan, but I always slip back to cheese and eggs. I love cheese (and yes, I know it comes from milk) and I really love eggs. Those times that I decided to be vegan, I found it difficult because at the time, I wasn't doing it properly. The first time I did it, I went vegan for almost two weeks and I always felt hungry. I later realized it was because I wasn't eating enough whole grains to keep me sated. A later time, I was doing really well at being vegan until I attended a function that was serving deviled eggs and I absolutely lost it. No matter what I said to myself, I couldn't resist those eggs. I'm at a point now where I think I've found a nice balance. I (serve my family and) eat a mainly vegan diet with lots of whole grains, fresh veggies/fruit, almond milk, tofu, seitan and use yummy recipes I've found on the vegan websites I frequent. Occasionally I incorporate cheese into a meal and even less occasionally I'll have a plate of scrambled eggs. All my baking is exclusively vegan because why add eggs and milk when I can make it without?
How do you maintain balance in your vegetarian life? Do you feel guilty if you eat cheese or eggs but enjoy them too much to give them up completely? Are you even an aspiring vegan, or are you just happy to avoid meat/meat products? What prevents you from eliminating milk/cheese/eggs and other animal products from your diet?
I'm just curious about these things, I'm not trying to start a flame war.
Thanks!

Hey everyone! I'm currently doing an exchange away from home and I'm looking for help finding something delicious to make for supper that involves plain yogurt. I bought a large container to make a dip but I still have quite a bit remaining and would like to use it up asap.
Since I'm on the exchange, I do have limited kitchen materials. I have one large pot, 2 small pots, aluminum oven tins and a frying pan. However, I don't have anything fancy (i.e. a blender) so I need the recipes to be somewhat simple. Thanks!

| Seeking Quick/Easy Vegetarian Recipes |
[16 Jul 2009|05:54pm] |
My brother is a newly single father. He also happens to be a vegetarian :)
As a gift, I'd like to compile a cookbook for him with recipes that are easy for a single-working parent and, hopefully, some that are kid-friendly as well. He's got a pretty well-appointed kitchen and will have a crock pot. He doesn't have a food processor and I can't see that changing.
Comfort food recipes are especially appreciated :D
More details: He's a lacto-ovo vegetarian. He's 35 and I haven't lived with him in 20 years so I'm don't know all of his likes and dislikes. I know he's liked everything I've made for him which includes roasted veggie lasagna, korma, mushroom strudel, lentil shepherd's pie, lentil chili, and various other dishes. He likes stirfrys and soups. His palate seems to be quite expansive at this point! (This is still surprising to me since he was quite picky when we were kids.) My nephew is 2 and, from what I can tell, just wants to eat whatever dad is eating. No food allergies exist that I'm aware of.
I've already bought over 20 "real" veg*n cookbooks for him so I'm not looking for suggestions there, I just want to compile something a bit more personal for him since he's going through rough times and doesn't have a whole lot of time to find recipes on his own. He also hasn't done tons of cooking from recipes in his life, so I don't think he has the time to figure out which ones are quick or not, etc.
Thank you so very much for any help and recipes!
(I've posted this in a few other veg communities, so I apologize if this is a repeat for some of you.)

Filmmakers Attacked By Seal Hunters Some of you may or may not know that about a month ago Seal-Alert South Africa had the amazing opportunity to buy out the entire Namibian Seal Hunt (for $14 million). I'm not 100% sure what's going on with it - I've pledged some money but am not sure where things stand at the moment. Noticeably absent, according to Francois Hugo's reports, were pledges from HSUS, IFAW, PeTA and other groups with huge base numbers. As he pointed out, HSUS has 11 million members - if everyone had pledged one stinky little dollar then they would have been sooooo close to completing the buyout.
And to be truthful, I have to express a great deal of negative surprise at the lack of interest this buyout deal has received from AR groups and activists alike. Come on, I mean, imagine if we can shut down one industry! How amazing would that be?
I don't know the ins and outs of Namibian seal hunting, but apparently it's more vicious than what happens in Canada.
I received this alert this morning:

| Seitan Question |
[15 Jul 2009|11:39am] |
I'm looking through recipes for making seitan and I see that many recipes mix the vital wheat gluten with whole wheat flour to make the dough--and other recipes call for just the vital wheat gluten. Does anyone have experience with either types of recipes? What are the differences?
Thanks!

| Morningstar Farms Corn Dogs |
[15 Jul 2009|12:42pm] |
Are they being discontinued? I bought the last boxes of both the regular and Natural Ingredients varieties at my local Kroger, Publix, and Wal-Marts. They haven't been stocked in at least three months, and they have been removed from the MSF website.
If so, it's a damn shame, and I hope someone can point me to a comparable alternative. I've tried the kind they sell at Trader Joe's, and they are definitely inferior. The "dog" part is barely distinguishable from the "corn" part amidst the mush.

| Have been lurking |
[14 Jul 2009|12:29pm] |
Hi. I am new and in transition to being vegetarian. Ova lacto -- I guess, but then again those might go too once I have the hang of this thing. My dairy and eggs already come from cruelty free, local sources, so I am willing to wait for now on making any transition beyond the no meat thing.
It isn't going to be a huge transition for me, simply because I do not eat much meat now. I eat virtually no red meat, very little poultry and mostly only occasional bacon.
My focus here is to become better rounded in the vegetarian meals I do eat. I also have the added problems of needing to eat every 2-3 hours lest my blood sugar drops and needing to eat mostly low carb, low GI foods because I have insulin resistance.
My big battles are foods I can take to work that are easy to eat on the go every few hours, that don't require heating up.
I am not giving up all meat "cold turkey" because I would rather change my lifestyle a bit at a time than have some sort of dramatic switch that I can't sustain.
So people, talk to me about lunches, high fiber and protein things that don't need heating up.

| Good veggie Indian cookbooks/websites? |
[13 Jul 2009|11:38pm] |
|
Hi. I just joined, apparently in the middle of a coup that would make Honduras look proud.
Anyways. I don't care who the Mods are. I care that I want to cook Dal, and Sambar, and Vada, and Idli, and I want to learn now.
I'm eating more vegetarian food, and a lot more Indian food. Now, I want to try to make some at home. So, what are some good Indian websites/cookbooks? I eat dairy and eggs, and would love to cook with these. I just want to avoid meat. I don't care if the sites/books have meat recipes in them, I'll just ignore those. I especially love South Indian cuisine.
So, hook me up. Thanks!

| Cheezus |
[13 Jul 2009|09:14am] |
I don't eat cheese but I thought this would be of interest to lacto-vegs.
I came across the following while reading for a biology class I am taking:
Hard cheeses are produced using genetically modified organisms. A milk-clotting enzyme that has been used to make cheese and other dairy products is chymosin. Chymosin, historically, has obtained from the stomachs of claves. Now, genetically modified organisms (in particular, fungi) produce the chymosin. It is estimated that about 90% of hard cheeses are now made using the “new” enzyme which is obtained from a genetically modified organism.

[12 Jul 2009|01:16pm] |
I've always heard that the tacos at Jack in the Box don't have meat in them, that they're some sort of soy something or other.
Can anyone confirm this?
I really like them a lot.

| Animal Communication - OT |
[12 Jul 2009|05:52am] |
I apologize for the off topic post, but my cat is dying and I thought people here might be able to help me.
I was wondering if anyone knew of an "on call" animal communicator. My 18 year old calico cat, Missy, was diagnosed with cancer in her intestines yesterday and started on Prednisolone, but she doesn't seem to be doing well at all. I'm taking her back to the vet in a few hours, but I wanted to consult with an animal communicator first. The one I know I sent an email to, but I am waiting to hear back.
If you happen to know of anyone, I would be forever grateful. I don't want Missy to suffer, but I want to do what she wants, whether that is fight or help her let go of this life.
Thank you.

| Metaxa Sauce |
[12 Jul 2009|11:25am] |
This may be a long shot, but does anyone know of a good recipe for metaxa sauce? I had the most divine sauce at our local Greek restaurant yesterday, and I would kill to be able to recreate the sauce at home...it's absolutely godly with fried zucchini or aubergines.
And if no, does anyone have any similar tasting recipes? It's a tomatoey cream sauce that I think has some type of brandy or other liquor in it.

| Babycakes cupcakes |
[11 Jul 2009|11:31pm] |
I just started working in Manhattan and I bought a couple of red velvet cupcakes from Babycakes bakery yesterday, and they were insanely good. But, at $3.50 a pop, I can't really afford to indulge my sweet tooth there all the time. Does anyone have Erin McKenna's book, and if so, how successful were you with the recipes? My attempts at mimicking favorite restaurant dishes never seem to work out, so I guess what I'm saying is, did they taste anywhere near as good as the real thing? Also, I know a lot of the ingredients are atypical of the standard ingredients for brownies and cupcakes (I mean, I've personally never noticed agave nectar in the aisles of my supermarket, but I could be looking in the wrong place)...is the cost of the ingredients a big step up from traditional dessert ingredients?
I plan on buying the cookbook soon, but if anyone has it I would love the red velvet recipe :) In general, though, I'd like to get some of everyone's favorite cupcake recipes! I'm not a vegan, but I'd love to have some dairy-free, egg-free recipes to sample.
